The Town of Whitby is steeped in heritage and small-town charm, and is located only 30 minutes east of Toronto, on the northern shore of Lake Ontario. LIVE-- New houses in Whitby are visible in the Village of Brooklin and along the north side of Taunton Road.  Local housing stock consists predominantly of single-detached, semi- detached and link units, through there is a growing number of available townhomes and condominiums. Average prices start in the mid-$200’s, but if it’s a million Dollar home you’re looking for, you’ll be able to find it in Whitby.
           

Residents can spend their shopping dollars in several local malls and plazas. Whitby Mall offers more than 400,000 square feet of shops and services. The Thickson Ridge Power Centre features big-box retailers like Home Outfitters, Home Depot and Sears Whole Home. In Whitby’s downtown core, Pearson Lanes offers unique shops, services and restaurants housed in revitalized Victorian buildings.
 

WORK-- Whitby’s main industries include steel, automotive parts, pharmaceuticals, plastics, packaging, telecommunications, paper, publishing and electronics. Tool manufacturing and defense technology, recycling and environmental management, and food processing industries can also be found here.
Whitby’s top public-sector employers include Lear Corporation, Sobeys Whitby Retail Support Centre, Gerdeau Ameristell Corp., McGraw-Hill Ryerson Ltd. And BMW Canada Incorporated.
 Residents commute to, from and within Whitby via a variety of possibilities. Highway 401 runs through South Whitby, extending east to the Quebec border and west to the U.S border. Other main arteries include Highway 2, 12, 7 and the future 407. Environmental assessments are currently in the works with plans to extend Highway 407 by 2013.
Go Transit commuter trains and busses offer daily service between Whitby and most of GTA, while Whitby and most of the GTA, while Whitby Transit has been absorbed by Durham Region Transit, making travel throughout the region easier.
 Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic District School Board govern local public and separate schools, respectively.
Trafagal Castle School is an independent school for girls; the original castle was built in the mid-19th century. Whitby is also home to Durham College’s Skills Training centre.

PLAY -- Whitby has one of the finest natural harbours on the shores of Lake Ontario. Whitby’s waterfront includes a marina, beaches, restaurants, and a trail that extends across the town’s entire shoreline, liking parks and conservation areas. The Lynde Shores and Heber Down conservation areas are especially appealing.
 Sporting facilities in Whitby are numerous. There are facilities for golfing, baseball, soccer, squash, curling, racquetball and more. Whitby also has four community centres, including the Iroquois Park Sports Center- the country’s largest municipal sports centre. The $12 million dollar venture boasts 240,000 square feet, contains tennis courts, two pools, six arenas, a 600-seat restaurant, banquet rooms, and pro shop and more.
 For alternative forms of entertainment Whitby offers shows at the Whitby Courthouse Theatre and visiting Hunter Farms, or Camp X Intrepid Park. The Station Gallery, originally named the Whitby Junction Grand Truck Railway Station, now operates art exhibitions, lectures and workshops in a pleasant Victorian building.
           Whitby also runs annual events such as Music in the Park, Heritage Day Street Festival, Whitby Harbour Days, Country Town Carnival, the Tree Lighting Celebration and more.
